Collections: | Manitoba Gay and Lesbian Archives |
Description: | A notice produced by Gays for Equality protesting the lack of protection of the civil and human rights of Manitoba's homosexual citizens. The notice references a demonstration organized to protest the inaction of the Schreyer government. This documents is related to later action by Gays for Equality when they pledged their support for Richard North's hunger strike - an attempt to secure the protection of gay people's human rights through their inclusion in the Human Rights Code. In August of 1984 North announced his intention of starting a hunger strike if the Manitoba government did not include sexual orientation in the Human Rights Act. In conjuction with the Human Rights Code petition, partners Chris Vogel and Richard North were legally battling the Pronvincial Government for same-sex spouse benefits as Vogel was an employee of the province at the time. Part of the policy of the NDP government was the protection of gay people's human rights, however after nearly three years in power, no efforts and been made to amend the Human Rights Act. North conducted a 59 day hunger strike, to no effect. Finally, in 1987 the Province of Manitoba enacted legislation to amend the Human Rights Code to include protection from discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation. In 1995, same-sex spousal benefits were granted through the Manitoba Court of Appeals decision in favor of Vogel v. The Manitoba Government. |
