In 1957, the Tyndall Rockets, a softball club con- sisting of grades 6, 7 and 8 students, was organized by Mr. John Petrash. The team had its own execu- tive of Jimmy Johnson, LaUrel Nelson, Peter Ka— zina, Frances Downie and Terry Ostholm. They sponsored an amateur night to raise money; they purchased white tee-shirts with Tyndall Rockets printed across the front. The students were divided into three different squads, each with its own cap- tain and assistant captain: grades 7 and 8 boys—— Jimmy Johnson and Terry Chercoe, Grades 6, 7 and 8 girls—Jeanette Reder and Carol Dammann, grade 6 boys—Gary Weselake and Stanley Kazina. The Tyndall Junior High boys’ teams of the 1960s were practically unbeatable. In 1969, their teacher and coach, Mr. Henry Kazina, decided to mould a girls’ team for the Agassiz School Division tour- nament. The girls didn’t enjoy their practice sessions very much. However, they simply destroyed the op- position in every game at the tournament. Mr. Keith Long, superintendent of schools, presented the trophy to the happy girls and complimented them on their excellent play and exemplary conduct and sportsmanship. With the demise of baseball (hardball) in the area in the early 1960s, the Tyndall Fastball team began to take shape. Pick-up teams, which played for fun and the odd case of ale at informally arranged tour- naments in Sinnot’s Park, began to hold practices at the local ball park. Entry into the Northeastern Fastball League soon became a reality. By 1969, the team was good enough to win the south division championship. Unfortunately, they lost the league championship in three straight games to the strong north division champs, the Pinawa Pioneers. In 1970, the Tyndall Fastball team played in the Winnipeg Men’s Industrial Fastball League. On the strength of the superb pitching of Alf Kazina and Eugene Michalow, Tyndall won the Division “A” finals in Winnipeg and then went on to compete in the provincial Intermediate “A” fastball champi— onship at Portage la Prairie. Pine Falls captured the gold medals with a perfect record in the round-robin playoff. Tyndall finished second and received the silver medals. By 1974, Tyndall was back in the Northeastern Manitoba Fastball League. In the late 19705, the team joined the Interlake Fastball League where it played until it folded.
