THE REED FAMILY The father and daughter of this family served in the Second World War, Clarence A. Reed, the father, also served in World War 1. Born at. Stony Mountain, Manitoba, July 7th, 1894, he was the son of one of the original settlers. of the Stony Mountain district. His father and mother came from Ontario. CLARENCE A. REED On June 5, 1915, he joined the 61st Battalion C.L.I, under regimental No. 229267, and was discharged on the 19th of April, 1919, with the rank of Corporal. In his first; service be. trained in Winnipeg and Camp Scum“ and went. to England March 27, 1916, and served in England and Framer until he was discharged. He was wounded May 3, 1917, and went bark to serve, being awarded the Military Medal in 1918. He came back in Canada and was employed on the Staff of the Manitoba Penitentiary from which position he enlisted for service in World War TWO. I-le enlisted June 20, 1941, with the R.C.A.F. under Regimental No, R 110698, and went. overseas on the 29th of March, 1944, and served with the Bomber Command in England. He was discharged January 15, 19“} with the rank of Corporal. Clarence was the only one who enlisted from Stony Mountain in World War I, to join the forces a second time in 1911. KATHLEEN A. REED Was born at, Stony Mountain. She enlisted February, 1944, with the C.VV.A.C. under Regimental No. W 100639. She trained in Vermilion. Alberta, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Arnprior and Ottawa, Ontario, and held the rank of Sergeant. KENNETH IIOVVARD RID LEY Was born in Winnipeg on December 22nd, 1916, and joined the R.C.A.l~‘ on November 21, 1940, under Regimental No. J16105. He took his train- ing at Regina, Saskatchewan; Portage la Prairie, Manitoba; Yorkton. Saskatchewan; and Carlyle, England. While overseas he was attached at. different times to the following squadrons: 288 Squadron—Army Co-op in England, using Lysander and Defiant» 183 Squadron—Fighter Dive Bombers in England, using Typhoons. 42 Squadron——Fighter Dive Bombers in Assam, on the Burma Front. using Hurricanes. Most. of his overseas service was in the East on the Burma front. Here he participated in flying supplies into Assam, which was surrounded hi! the Japs at the time, Back in England he did dive bomber duty over the Continent and also some anti-shipping duty. J18688, and graduated. shortly afterwards as a Wireless Air Gunner. He was born in Winnipeg on the 31st day of March, 1921. Norman took his training at Toronto, Camp Borden and Guelph, Ontario. He was drafted overseas in February, 1942, where he resumed his training at Cranwell, England, and at Prestwiek and Wick, Scotland. On completion of training he joined 179 Squadron and was stationed at Gibraltar. Here he completed his tour and returned to England and eventually to Canada. He was discharged on the 10th of September, 1945, with the rank of Flying Officer. TIIE J. P. ROBERTSON FAMILY SIDNEY ALLEN ROBERTSON Was born at Stony Mountain, Manitoba, February 18th, 1912. Enlisted 27th July, 1940, with the RCA. under regimental No. 11-54629, and was discharged on September 22nd, 1945, with the rank of Sergeant. Trained in Canada; arrived in Liverpool November 23rd, 1941. Saw service at Naples, Ortono, Marseilles, the Rhone Valley, and arrived with his regiment at Otterlo, Holland, on the 6th of March, 1945. Wounded-17th April, 1945. His regiment was engaged in hand to hand combat with the Germans at Otterlo, when three Germans came forward to surrender with uplifted hands, and Sid says this is what took place: “The officer in the trio had a grenade concealed in his sleeve and let loose when we came to take them into custody”. I received a broken leg in three places, and) six shots fired into my stomach." “What happened to the Germans?” Sid smiled. "I guess they‘re under the dirt.” Sid was mentioned in Dispatches. He returned to Canada and was discharged. ROBERT EDG'AR ROBERTSON Was born at Grassmere, Manitoba, September 26th, 1905. He enlisted on the 2nd of: July, 1940, with the RCA. under regimental No. 1135445. lie was attached to the Signal Section of the Regiment as Staff-Sergeant. Trained in Canada and England. He was in the Commando Raid on the Island of Spitzbergen to destroy their radio station and on their return his ship was torpedoed, in September, 1941, and he received injuries.
