$250,000 facility. This arena remains the town’s
major pride and joy.

Some Sperling hockey players went on to greater
heights, even the NHL. While town athletes in other ,
sports didn’t achieve quite that level of prominence,

Sperling produced its share of good curlers and base-
ball players. Baseball teams were organized as far
back as 1910, and many did quite well, as did some of
the girls’ softball teams. Curling got started in 1916
and has produced some excellent practitioners of the
game over the years, such as Dorothy Rose, who went
on to garner recognition at the national level. Town
athletes also achieved some success at track and field
on occasion, and for a brief spell around 1910 Sperling
actually fielded a regular football team.
