School Transportation

In 1912, Gabriel and I started going to
school at Caledonia, three miles away from our
farm. Gabriel was ten years old and I was eight.
Once in a while we would travel to school in the
horse-drawn wagon. There was a little barn for
the horses beside the school. During the
summertime, we walked there in bare feet,
carrying our shoes in our schoolbags so that we
did not wear them out.

Togo to school, Henri would have to walk four
kilometres even if he took the shortcut through Mr.
Sauveur Desrosiers yard. One day, while walking
through the woods on his way to school, Henri came
face to face with a bear. Of course, after that he didn’t
want to go to school on foot anymore. Therefore he
had to be driven to school in the horse-drawn sleigh.
Then one day the horse took off and Elisabeth and
the schoolchildren she had picked up along the way
had quite a tumble and had been slightly hurt.
. Mother decided then and there that the family was
Louise Gayet & Marie-Louise Lansard moving to the village.
