1920 ADBITH’NS (continued) There was a contest in 1920 to name the new rink just built on Gaddy Street North. After much deliberation and judging of entries, it was decided to call it "The Portage Arena". There was to be no more smoking in the Arena, as the smoky haze was blanketing the ice and making it hard to watch the game. When the rink burned in the early '303, careless smoking was suspected. The Playhouse Theatre opened in 1925 with owner C.W.Taylor offering a prize of a three month free pass for the naming of this fine new entertainment centre. Dog races were an annual event on New Years on Saskatchewan Avenue. With plans for an addition to Portage’s twenty year old Post Office (now our City Hall), there was a clamour to have a tower and a clock added, as was the original plan. Imperial Oil built a warehouse on 3rd St. NE by the railway tracks, on the site of the old Flat River Lumber Company. ‘There was not to be a Normal School in Portage in 1925, necessitating teachers-in-training to have to go to Winnipeg to train. The Fair of 1928 featured the Conklin & Garrett Shows, with admission being .50 at the gate and the grandstand included. The Governor General of Canada paid a visit to Portage that year. Beer was served at 10¢ a glass. And Portage saw one of the biggest funerals in its history when Cyprian Costigan passed away. City and Railway Police discovered a hobo village out east of the Brick Yard, subsequently kicked out the inhabitants and burned their huts. N.J. Prior was advertising the "Freedom Corset", with no steel, bones, clasps or laces. Brown's Limited was offering a six piece solid walnut bedroom suite for $250.00. The local Old Folks Home, or the Home for lncurables as it was also known, would now be called "The Home for Aged and Infirm". This is now our Manitoba Developmental Centre. Liberal Harry Leader entered the political scene, and Conservative Arthur Meighen retreated!!!
