McTAVISH MOTORS — Lorne McTavish. In the late twenties two trucks were purchased for gravel hauling. The drivers were Ches McTavish, Howard McTavish, Bill Hall, and Alex Mack. In the 30's as the family matured, they purchased a fleet of trucks for trucking cream to Caton's Creamery at Rapid City from points as far off as Beulah, Crandall, Lenore, Rivers, Strathclair, Newdale and most points in between. Cream truck drivers were Ches McTavish, Lorne McTavish, Tom Spiller, Lloyd Duxbury, Ed Biccum, Marshall Gould, Lloyd Wilson and Bob Biccum. Also in the 30's, the family built a dance floor in the local rink and operated summer dances for several years. They were involved in local grain trucking from farms to elevators in Cardale. About 1938, the dance floor was used to build a garage on the back of the shop. In 1946, after the war, T. J. and son, Lorne, formed a partnership and took on a dealership with Ford Motor Co., handling cars, trucks, tractors, and implements. For a time they sold appliances and televisions. After T. J.'s death in 1960, Lorne operated the business as McTavish Motors. He continued with the Ford Line and later added the Versatile Implement line and finally the Morris line of implements. Other lines handled were: Cominco fertilizers and Imperial Oil products, tires, etc. Cars and trucks sales were discontinued in 1966. 53
