CARDALE LADIES CURLING Back in 1927, William McFarland and Ed Westbrook got the ladies of the district who were interested in learning to curl, to come to the rink one Saturday where they gave them instructions on the art of curling. Before the day was over a Ladies Curling Club was organized with eight rinks being formed. The skips were Mrs. T. J. McTavish, Mrs. Fred Reid, Mrs. John Todd, Mrs. Bert Hall, Mrs. William McFarland, Dora Gilbert, Millie Lampkin and Mabel Biccum. Curling took place on Saturdays and Wednesday evenings. Some Saturdays everyone brought their lunches and made a full day of it with all eight rinks taking part. There were two sheets of ice, one on either side of the skating ice. There was a small waiting room on the east end, with a small lunch counter in one end. Using an old box stove we managed to heat water for tea and all were able to enioy their lunch even if it was a bit crowded. One time the men had the ice marked out to curl for points, they asked any of the ladies who would like to try to ioin them. Both the Men's and Ladies' Curling Clubs put up prizes. All the decisions as to where to place the broom, were made by the person who was throwing the rock, someone held the broom and the thrower was expected to sweep his own rock. Points were given for "take-out", “draw-in" and the ability to put a guard in place. 86
