TRANSCONA PUBLIC LIBRARY The T ranscona Public Library began as a volunteer effort by the Home and School Association in May 1955 when one hundred and fifty six books were loaned by the University Extension Service. This travelling library was first located in the Court Room of the old Town Hall on Victoria Avenue. When this building was demolished, the library moved to the Scout Headquarters on Winona Street. The library then moved to Central School where it shared space with the school library. With a growing membership, it became very evident that a permanent library location was a necessity. A referendum held in October 1957, resulted in the formation of a municipal library officially named the Transcona Public Present & former staff of the Library Pictures Courtesy of D. In 1961, a new 3,800 sq. ft. library was constructed at 111 Victoria Avenue West, at a cost of $50,000 and a budget of $13,000. In 1967, as a Centennial project, the size of the building was doubled. Since the implementation of amalgamation in January 1979, the Transcona Public Library has become part of the Winnipeg Public Library System. On October 15, 2011, the Transcona Public Library celebrated its “50th Anniversary. It was a great time to get together with former staff, current staff and all of the many library patrons, who attended this celebration. It was a great time to reminisce and celebrate with friends. The Transcona Branch is proud of the many services provided for the community. Special story hours, class visits and summer reading programs are available in the designated children’s area.
