MURRAY ROUGEAU Murray Rougeau has been a long-time resident of Transcona. His father worked for the CNR and was tragically killed in the Dugald train wreck in 1947. Murray was one of eight fulltime firefighters hired in 1970 by the City of Transcona, and then became part of the Winnipeg Fire Department in 1974 as part of the amalgamation of all municipalities. Murray served for thirty nine years retiring as a District Chief. Murray is married to wife Linda (Sward). He has volunteered for the Christmas Cheer Board, and was a Co—Chair for the Transcona Homecoming Celebrations that were held in 2010. He also served on the Transcona Hi Neighbour Festival committee. Murray is a currently a board member of the Transcona Historical Museum, the Transcona Playground Renewal Committee, and is a Co—Chair of the Transcona Centennial Committee. For the last nine years, Murray is known as the “Graffiti Guy”. You may have seen Murray ' driving his “Anti-Graffiti” truck through a Transcona neighbourhood with one mission on his mind: GRAFFITI CLEANUP. With the assistance of funds from the City of Winnipeg, Councillor Russ Wyatt and Transcona Biz, Murray has run the graffiti removal service in Transcona since its inception. Murray has tirelessly donated his time to rid the area of unsightly tags, and since 2003 has logged countless hours to the removal of graffiti. In 2007, Murray received the Transcona Biz Mayor’s Award, a yearly award that is given Murray receiving Transcona Biz award from Mayor Sam Katz to an individual or group who has made a significant contribution to the Business Improvement Zone in their area. In“2009, Murray received a special recognition award in the Bridging the Generations category from the Creative Retirement organization. Murray has a passion, commitment and dedication to the community of T ranscona and is a true inspiration to us all. Through his tireless efforts, Murray has made the community of Transcona a better place to live and in recognition of his passion for Transcona, Murray will have a street named after him.
