ROBERT BLAIKIE Bob Blaikie came to Transcona in 1943 from Biggar, Saskatchewan, where he had been born and raised. Like many young men from Saskatchewan who came to T ranscona after getting on as apprentices with the Canadian MM! Wants: WECW W W um? ' ‘. '21,. H“. After serv1ce . am. ‘_. mm l with the Royal Canadian Navy from 1944 to 1945 Bob returned to the CN k .. 7 . m and to Transcona, and in 1948 he married Kathleen {Kay} Taylor, daughter of Alex Taylor, who was Chief of Police in Transcona from 1945 to 1953. They had four children, Bill, Donnie, Bobby and Kim. Bob Blaikie was, like his wife Kay, very active in the life of Transcona Memorial United Church. He was particularly active as a Cub Leader with third Transcona, and served as Transcona District Cub Camp Chief for several years. In his retirement years Bob devoted himself to the work of the Legion, and in this capacity he spearheaded the planning and building of Transcona Place and the rebuilding of the Transcona Legion after a serious fire in the 1990’s. Along with other veterans, he also visited many a classroom over the years in the weeks preceding Remembrance Day to talk to students about the importance of remembering. Robert Blaikie Place, a street in the Harbourview South area was named in his honour. Bob Blaikie passed away in 2003. Kay passed away in 2008. They were predeceased by their youngest son Bobby, who was killed in a motorcycle accident in 1979, at the age of twenty.
