Paul Cleave, Geo. Haake, located on Section 22, the present L. Randall farm. Paul later disposed of his land rights to» one of the McCool brothers who arrived in 1882, Cleave then went on to 15-3-17, the present Gordon Randall farm. Northcote School was built in 1886 on the southwest corner of 22—3—17. This became a regular community center, church services and social events being held as well as school. The first meeting to organize this district ‘was held at Paul Cleave’s home on May 15th, 1885. Geo. Haake was Chairman and W. J. Schnarr, secretary. Trustees elected were John McCorquodale, Paul Cleave and Angus McQueen. The first board meeting was held at McCorquodale’s on May 25th, when W. J. Schnarr was appointed the first sec.—treas. The name first chosen for the district was “Maple Leaf,” but this was rejected by the department of education as it duplicated one already in use. “N orthcote” was the name finally adopted. The Indian Rebellion was in progress throughout the northwest in 1885 and when spring opened on the Saskatchewan River, miltary authorities equipped the small steamer “Northcote” to patrol the water—way and relieve the northern posts, hence the name. The school was built in the spring of 1886 by Mills Bros. for $440.00. The first teacher was Tommy Atkinson, later CPR. agent at Manitou, G. B. Montie-th finished his term, then followed Jessie Poole, who taught in ’88, A. D. Johnson in ’89; after were Miss Kinsley, T. O, Webster, Miss Little, Art Hobkirk, Miss Lily Hob— kirk, Miss Wilson (later Mrs. Schnarr), Mrs. (Dr.) Ernest Montieth, Miss Watson, Mr. Tufts, Miss Dolly Williamson and Arthur Williams. Children between the ages of 4 and 16 were: Mary Dempsey, Kate McCorquodale, Maggie Campbell, Ella, Willia and Alex. Dempsey, Alex. McCorquodale, Joe and George Calloway, Geo. Cleave; the following year, John and Loughlin Cameron, Norah Cleave and Ettie McKenzie; in 1887 Wilbert Worden, Milly, Mary and Mabel Warden; in 1888 names added were Alex. McFalls, Willa Hodgins, Harold Borland, Geo. Miller, Wesley, Esther and Rebecca Hodgins, Ethel Hodgins, Austin Calloway, ,Mary Cameron and Edith Mitford. The new N orthcote School was built in 1905-6, the old one being remodelled as a house which was completely destroyed by the tornado in 1942.
