1955-1956 was the year of the “big” snow and it was a continual struggle for Bill to haul feed from the Birnie Place and valley for the livestock. The snow started on Hallowe'en and by the end of November all roads were blocked and it continued to snow and storm all winter. . {iii Les and Verne on bikes. Our daughter, Hazel Elizabeth was welcomed into the family on April 12, 1964. When she was 3 1/2 years old all the family went through a traumatic experience when a calf died of rabies. The Doole family was involved in 4-H for 28 years, showing 4—H commercial cattle at Dauphin, Foxwarren and Roblin. The Beef Club always took top priority, but they were involved in Swine, Handicrafts, and Conservation Clubs. All 3 members of the family took part in the Calf Scramble at Brandon Winter Fair and all were successful in catching a calf. They also were involved in 4—h exchange trips to USA and all across Canada. Participation in public speaking was a highlight, with Hazel competing at Provincial Level in Winnipeg in 1979. The Doole family was the third generation in 4-H, starting with Grandmother (Hazel Stauffer) in 1917, then Mother (Buryle) in the late thirties and our family since 1958. Our boys attended schools in Dropmore and Roblin. Hazel attended Roblin schools as Dropmore school closed in 1968. A note of interest here is the fact that she was the third generation to start school in the same room in the old Public School in Roblin. Her grandmother Hazel Stauffer went into this room after several school districts consolidated around 1912 or 1913, and her mother Buryle Doole started there in 1931. Mixed farming through the years with grain, cattle, horses, pigs, and poultry as well as a big garden kept the family fed and clothed. Many changes were made on the farm through the years. In the late fifties, the old blacksmith shop from Dropmore was moved and used for a barn, then in 1968, with the flooding of the valley Bill, purchased the big barn on the former Archie Goodbun and George Dietrich place in the valley and moved it over the ice on the lake in the winter of 1969. In 1971, when the Pool Elevator was to be taken down, Bill bought the office and shed and moved it to the farm for a shop. The old house which had been the lumber yard house in Dropmore, had been moved to the farm sometime in the thirties. In 1971 and 1972 we built our new home and really enjoyed the running water and many more conveniences. The Doole Family... The family participated in all community activities through the years including church, curling and 4—H. Bill served on the elevator, school, church, rink and hall boards as well as 14 years on the board of Roblin Residences Inc. at Roblin. Buryle was also involved with the RDCG Ladies Church Club, curling club, 4-H and Dropmore Chicks during the 10 to 11 years they were active. ,. ' a .. J , . , ., . Buryle and Bill's 40th Anniversary.
