A letter to Robert Stewart of 1815 Logan Avenue (March 9”“ 1936) This is your authority to collect dog licenses, issue receipts and tags, on behalf of the Village of Brooklands. Signed, Yours Truly, J Reeves, Administrator. Shows Brooklands Police were actively policing more than just traffic and property crimes.
A Public Notice dated February 28th, 1947 advised license fees for - Alsations - German Shepherd - Belgian Police - Husky dogs, Great Danes, or any cross-breed of the above were to be licensed for:
Male: $5.00. Female: $7.50
For each dog of any breed other than those above:
Male: $2.00. Female: $3.00. Kennel License: $10.00
If it became necessary for the Village or Town to have an animal destroyed, a letter would be drawn up between the Town Council and the owner agreeing to this.
Bicycle Licenses
The bicycle by-laws were very extensive. The City of Winnipeg has licensed bicycles since 1899 with the exception of 1907 and some recent years, when the license has been in abeyance. The Village licensed and collected fees from anyone in Brooklands possessing a bicycle.
A 1946 Public Notice advised bicycle licenses were due and could be paid at the Tax Office, White School (Cressy School.) Charges were 50 cents annually for a bike license, which was a small (2” square tin) two coloured metal plate. The City of Winnipeg published a book for missing or stolen bikes/licenses for 1931 to 1938. This book, issued 1938 has over 87 pages with two columns of listings.
