There are some parties in this city who are destined to get into trouble if they do not mend ther ways very quickly. We refer to dog their-es. Dog stealing has become a very common practice latterly and we are informed that it is the intention of the author-L ties, to deal severely with the tlieives if discovered. Chief Murray. and the proprietor of the “ Golden" had dogs stolen but recovered them. TIIE ARIJ NGTONS. The Arlington troupe played to an- other good house last night. The pro- gramme though was not as good as that of previous evenings yet furnished a performance that afi’brded the utmost satisfaction, and elicited very frequent applause. Mr. Banks XVinters sang several songs in his usual excellent style but some of the eflect was lost by the comet in the accompanment being tooloud. Billy Arlington eclipsed his former cfiorts and proved himself a thorough minstrel. He is immense. Mr. Gooderham, of this city by request gavea clog dance and was forcedto respond to an encore. Alton proved himself a good female mimic and brought down the house by his feats in that line. To-night there will be an entire change of programme and as this will be tne company's last ap- pearance it is thought they will be greeted with a bumper house—which they well deserve. DR. THOMAS. Chicago, Sept. l-l—The Rev. Dr. Thomas has been interviewed by a Tribuné reporter, and in answer to the question : “What would be the efl’ect of your expulsion on the church. said : “If they go on and expel me the general impression, I think, must be that the church will have taken a step in the direction of narrowness instead of breadth, and this I should very deeply regret. It is a fact that in nearly all the other Protestant churches, both in this country and Europe, there is a growth in the direction of larger liberty, They do not in Europe nor in New Eng- land pretend to bind men down to the old, narrow conceptions of the Bible ;' nor do I think that, either there or here, men are generally held to the pencil in- terpretation of the atonement. Indeed, almost universal there that the final doom of the soul is not settled at the moment of death, and almost the whole church of England is coming into the same broader faith. And so, too, all the more scholarly men in most of the churches in this country. There is coming forward now an immense amount of learning and careful thought upon that subject, the result of which is to give men a more hapeful vision of the future. I should be sorry to see t h o Methodist church at this tune going out of its articles of rc- lig'ion and of the great Ch‘t‘ds of ishmeut a dogma to which all her minis- ters. tobe faithful. must. subscribe. As it is, we can lawfully leave that a some- what open question. “’ith the thought and learning that arc coming forward there will be a great change in the pub- lic mind in the next ten yeam. The Methodist church is. however liberal in one thing. It permits Bis-hol) Foster to go on undisturbed. although he has do nied the resurrection of the body. which is a doctrine both of the articles of re. ligion and of the upOstlcs and Nicene creeds.
