There, silver, gold and diamond elocution contests were held in which several local competitors won awards. Of the R.T. of T. at Nelson — details are not available. MIAMI AGRICULTURAL SOCIETY The first meeting of the Miami citizens interested in forming an Agricultural Society was held in Dr. Elliot’s office March 23rd 1907. The following directors were appointed: Wm. Montgomery, George Mustard, Thos. Reeve, Isaac Bowman, Samuel Umphrey, R. N. Loyns, Chas. Hef- ford, Norman Kennedy, C. F. Smith and D. Lawson. Wm. Montgomery was elected President and held that office for ten years. He was followed by C. F. Smith in 1917 and Howard Hawken in 1919. Dr. Elliot was the first Secretary followed by Wm. Scott in 1907, and in 1910 by R. Paterson. In 1911 Thos. H. Rumbal was elected and held the office until 1925. The first fair was held July 6th, 1907. There were 155 exhibitors. The Ladies Exhibits were held in the I.0.0.F. Hall. In October 1907 a committee was formed to locate “Fair Grounds.” To procure funds for the property the directors canvassed the Miami district and collected $487. The Society purchased 15 acres from Sam Cowan for $1500. the first pay— mem being $500. and $1,000. was raised by a mortgage. In Iuly 1910 the final payment was made to Wm. Kennedy. 107
