(Loni), Larus Bjornson, Halldor Austman, Eysteinn Thorsteinson. This body elected J. Briem as chairman, J. Jonasson as secretary, and H. Sigmundson as treasurer.
When the cold weather set in the year before, the outside of the church had been completed, except for the shingling, and that was arranged for at a February meeting. As soon as the weather moderated, a group of volunteers, some giving as much as a week apiece, agreed to do the shingling. That left only the fir floor to be laid, and this was done as soon as the interior was made rainproof. Then early in July, came the hurried job of making temporary benches. With everything ready, the first service in the new church of the Brethren was held on July 27, 1907, with Candidat Johann Bjarnason in the pulpit, and a packed house in attendance.
By the end of the year 1907, the church was complete on the out- side, with a wood burning heater inside and a stove pipe chimney. The Christmas concert, previously held in the school house, was now for the first time held the new church. The outstanding debt at this time was in— significant, as a result of the generous gift of one hundred fifty dollars, from the Djorfung Ladies’ Aid.
The regular annual meeting was held January 12, 1908. By the treasurer’s report it was shown that ninety—eight dollars had been ex- pended for current church expenses for the year, and that to date, the cost of the church reached $1600. These latter costs are nowhere detail- ed, andit must be presumed that included is a fair allowance for labor and material voluntarily given. A one thousand dollar free insurance coverage was placed with Gunnsteinn Eyjolfson, the local postmaster and general merchant. As a result of the annual meeting, there was a change of executive, with Halfdan Sigmundason as chairman, Jonas Jonasson, still secretary, and Valdi Halfdanson replacing his father as secretary. No further work was done on the church building during the year 1908. Evidently, the congregation was regaining its breath after the heavy ordeal of the year before, and probably still repaying small debts that must have cropped up here and there.
At the next annual meeting in January, 1909, Johann Briem became president again, with Kristjan Olafson as treasurer and Jonas Jonason continuing as secretary. At this meeting, Stefan Benidiktson presented to the congregation a twenty-five dollar donation from a friend. The name was not revealed but it was generally understood that this goodwill offering had come from S. Thorvaldson. It was during this year that F ridsteinn Sigurdson, then living in Argyle, informed the chairman that the charge for the property upon which the church was built, a matter of approximately two acres, would be thirty dollars, of which one-half would be returned as a donation to the church building fund. This was accepted with thanks.
