Times were poor. The second World War broke out soon after their marriage, causing sugar and gas rations. Isidore’s health was not too robust so hired help was required for the farming operations. These farming operations were done mostly by horsepower. Two of their young farm helpers enlisted during the war and were killed in action: Pat Gallagher in Italy and George Law during the siege of Hong Kong.
On May 8, 1946, Isidore passed away at the Victoria Hospital after a short illness at age 33. His death left Martha with the farm responsibilities as well as four young children to raise and care for on her own. The children ranged in age from 22 months to 9 years. How- ever, the first year, her kind and loving in-laws moved in and with hired help farmed the land. The next year, her brother Gus De Pape moved in and provided the needed help. Gus, along with Martha’s young sons, farmed the land until the boys were able to shoulder the full respon- sibility themselves. Gus then married and settled on a dairy farm in St. Boniface.
On June 11, 1960, daughter Lillian married Maurice Delichte, son of Henri and Maria Delichte. They took over the Delichte family farm on which they mix farm and operate a fine dairy. They have three daughters and a son.
The following month, on July 12, 1960, Edward married Margaret Simoens, daughter of Leon and Catherine Simeons of Bruxelles. They took over the family farm and now operate a large dairy. They have a large family of 10 children.
Martha was then left to make a decision what to do with her life as she still had two sons requiring further schooling. Her cousin, Fr. Remi J. De Roo, had just been appointed pastor at Holy Cross parish and needed some- one to take on the household duties for himself and 3 assistants. Upon hearing she was making a move, he immediately called her and offered her the work. The job included residence for herself, Donald and Herbert as well as providing schooling for the boys at Holy Cross School. It was too good an offer not to accept. On Aug. 1, 1960, they left Edward and Margaret on the farm. They left Cypress River (which held many happy and some sad memories) and numerous good friends behind to change to city life. It turned out to be a good move for her and her sons, who enjoyed their new school ex- perience. ,
Their stay at Holy Cross was short. On Oct. 31, 1962, Pope John XXIII appointed Fr. De Roo as Bishop of Victoria. Bishop Hill had died earlier that year and Victoria was left without a bishop. Again, the newly appointed bishop asked Martha to resume her duties and work for him in Victoria. After some thought and consul- tation with her sons and family, she accepted the offer. Being an avid gardener, Martha felt the lure of the milder West Coast climate and its many beautiful flowers and gardens. The boys decided they were old enough to tackle life on their own and preferred to continue their studies in Manitoba. On Jan. 31, 1963, she took her belongings and left by train to Victoria. In Victoria, Martha has made a very happy life for herself, has met many renowned people, made many friends, and enjoys entertaining her cousin Bishop Remi’s guests and friends. Martha loves
