Mr. Joe Hader sold his shoe repair business to Mr. Steve Dzus. At this time Mr. Dzus operated his business near the telephone office. In July, Miss Wadding- ton and Mr. W. H. Lee relinquished their interests in Elkhorn when they sold the Servus Store to Mr. W. O. Rudd. Mr. Francis J. Walker was honored at a fare- well banquet in November. He came to the village in 1905 and had set up a. garage and implement business. Also during November, Mr. Geo. Lidster, who had the meat market, passed away and the business was taken over by Mr. Ken Lidster. In December, Mr. Wm. Davies gave up his business as the Imperial Oil Agent. He was succeeded by Mr. W. J. Shurvell.

At this time the Queen's Cafe was run by Jake and Jim Wong. In Aug- ust they sold out after 21 years service, to Mr. Charles Tong. In April, 1945 Mr. Lindy Moore was appointed the Inter— national dealer. A short time later he opened a welding shop on Railroad Ave.

February 1945, an excerpt from a letter written by Ron Leslie of Cameron Highlanders: "Before New Year's, 12 of us boys (that's our section) had a nice supper. We bought a goose. I should be ashamed to tell you folks what we paid for it. 11: was 68 guldens (Dutch money) or $28. 50 in our money. What a price! You would think we had bought a horse.

It was a very small goose at that. Every time I took a piece, I said, "There'goes five bucks“. Darn near made me cry.- was just thinking that if you could drop your dough over here you'd be rolling in it in no time. I think I'll start up a goose ranch over here and quickly make a for- tune".

May brought a victorious end to the war. V-E Day was observed on May 8.
