GERRARD AND PLASKETT

Thos. married Annie Plaskett, who had a store in the house next to Wrights in the very early years. Later the Boulton Hotel was purchased and became their store.

David Wright worked in the store. The building was built by Graham Boulton, the barn was next to the store. Foundations built by Mr. Yeates. (Dods’ Grandfather).

Miss Sally Plaskett and her brother lived in a small house below the Rawza house. They had a stone milk- house that kept everything cool on even the hottest of days. They all came from Grimsby England.

DENMARKS

Denmarks lived in the house now owned by Pugsley’s. It‘ was originally owned by Boultons. Denmarks came from Ontario, arriving in the Russell area in the early ’803. His homestead was part of section 5 by the lake. He was the first postmaster for Shell River. William and Georgina had a large family, later they sold their house to Frank Bryants in 1891, when they arrived. Fanny the eldest married Ted Marten; they had four children. Ida, their older daughter died in Shellmouth age 18 years. Eva went west. the other two daughters Maud and Kate married brothers, Joe and Percy Burton and lived in Langenburg until 1914 when they moved to Chilliwaek, B.C. Alex Denmark, the older son, became a Doctor, and practiced in Langenburg district. Later he retired and went to England. Bob, their second son became a missionary and spent some years in Chili, South America. The J. Burtons had four daughters. The Percy Buttons had one son, Dennis.

The old Denmark house is still standing and in use today, occupied by Phil and Elsie Pugsley. Throughout the years the house included many families, the Langfords in 1912, the Laughlins, McFadyens, and Hoopers.

A sister of Mrs. Denmark’s, Sarah Denham was a frequent visitor during the early years.

One of our first teachers in Shellmouth was a cousin of Mr. Wm. Denmark, Gus Bonnycastle, who married Charles Boulton's oldest daughter, Nell.

JACK WOODS

Jack Woods was another helper on the farm about 1910. He was a huge man with a very hearty laugh. It was said that he went under an assumed name. In later years he went overseas and at that time took his real name which was David Huxley!

LEN BURLEY

' Len was a relative of the Pagans of Endcliffe, he went Overseas in W.W.I. and did not return.

Mr. T. Plaskett is the earliest pioneer of the district and also our oldest resident. He came here in the 1880’s and will be 97 years old June 28, 1942. Mr. Plaskett still has a remarkable memory and can relate many pioneer stories.

Mr. Wallace came here from Scotland in 1882, and has been one of our most respected citizens. Besides being our Postmaster for 2'? years he has served the community as municipal clerk, Justice of the Peace, Sunday school Superintendent. Choir Master, Church Organist, and many other ways. Mr. Wallace now lives with his sister Mrs. J. Bond.

Mrs. B.C. Stewart came here with her mother Mrs. Yeates in 1883. She received her education here and became a schoolteacher. Following her marriage to Mr. B.C. Stewart she made her home in Shellrnouth. Her two daughters Norah and Toby are in Eastern Canada.

Mr. Pat Yeates was the first baby born in Shellmouth in 1884. He lives with Mrs. Stewart.

Mr. and Mrs. Alex Roberts came to Shellmouth in 1888 from Ontario. They have both gone on and their daughter Mona lives in the old home.

Mr. Paul and Jack Roberts came from 30 miles east of Ottawa in 1889.

Mrs. M.B. Langford came to Shellmouth as a bride in 1892, and with the exception of a few years, she lived here most of her time. Her family were all educated here.

Mrs. T.C. Garnett came to Shellmouth with her parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. Allbright from Castleavery in 1892. After receiving her education here she worked in Mr. Gerrard’s store for a time and then married Mr. T. Garnett.

Mr. N. Morrison who has been a cattle buyer in this district for many years came from Owen Sound, Ontario in 1902. '

Mr. W. Morrison was born here in 1903. He is now a member of the Shellmouth School Board.

Mr. J. Langford was born here in 1896. He lives with his family on the site of the first Langford farm. He is chairman of the present school board.

Mr. T.C. Garnett came to Shellrnouth from London, Out. in 1904. For many years he was in the store with Mr. Gerrard and then moved to the farm a few miles east of town. Mr. Garnett has served on the school board for many years.

Mrs. G. Busch and the late Mr. Busch came to Shellmouth from Churchbridge, Sask. in 1905. Mr. Busch was a Storekeeper here until his death in 1934. Mrs. Busch still lives in the village with her family.

Mrs. J. Bond came here with the late Mr. Bond in 1904. She and Mr. Bond had both been schoolteachers in the old land and brought their interest in education with them. Mr. Bond was a keen horticulturist.

Mr. J. Mclnnis came to Shellmouth in 1910. He is the town livery and drayman.

Mr. G. Douglas came here in the 90’s. His birthday party is an annual event.
