John Peter Hamrlik was born in Czechoslovakia in 1871.
At the age of fourteen, he decided to make a life for himself in America, the country with its golden opportunities. Later, he spent several years with the army in the Spanish American war, serving in Manila and the Phillipines. Due to malaria] fever he was medically discharged and advised to seek a colder climate, which was Canada.
He arrived in Winnipeg just as Eaton’s were building their department store so he worked there for a couple of years.
John and Elizabeth Hamrlik, in the early thirties.
The government was advertising a quarter sec- tion of land for ten dollars. He chose a site near Sky Lake where they settled. He and his wife formed and operated the Hamrlik Post Office. Mail was brought in by foot from Arborg. After six years they left and came north to what is now knoWn as Hodgson, Man. , . and he filed for the 8.5. quarter of Sec. 34, twp. 25, 1

Breaking was done with oxen and horses, and a flail was used to thrash the grain. Later, a treadmill ,_ was used, run by horses. Then they bought a three- wheeled tractor and a threshing machine.
In the earlier days they had to go to Arborg for groceries and supplies, which was a two-day trip by horse and wagon.
