SANDY LAKE NURSING HOME

researched and written by Helen Maluk and Alfred Neckwednik

The community of Sandy Lake must have realized a dream in 1952 when after much planning and toil, the doors of their Medical Nursing Unit were opened. This dream began and must have endured for nearly a decade before the building was finnliy completed.

Rumours were that work on the new structure had been stopped, but

when interviewed by a local newspaper. unit president Ira. Dewitt stated 5. that the unit would probably open its door in June. Nestled on the slope

of a hill looking west, on the southern fringe of town. the building presented a squat appearance from the front, of a one»storey building. Behind was a sheer drop of 40 feet.

The ground floor contained laundry rooms, doctor’ s office and waiting room, furnace room and space for x-rays and living quarters for-

the technician. On the main floor were four wards. painted in restful =,
