the
cabinet
to
fill
the
vacancy
caused
by
the
retirement
of
Mr.
Tarbe.
It
is
probable
that
he
will
become
Minister
of
Marine
and
Fisheries.
The
functions,
of
this
department
are
likely
to
be
intended
to
include
the
►supervision
of
the
St.,
Lawrence
wa
terway.
This
will
add
materially
to
the
importance
of
the
portfolio.
In
the
consequent
readjustment
of
the
Cabinet,
Hon.
Jamas
Sutherland,
who
hae
been
Minister
of
Marine
and
Fisheries,
since
lie
entered
the
government,
will
probably
become
Minister
of
Public
Works.
Raymond
Prefontaine,
the
new
min
ister,
has
had
a
long
and
active
poli
tical
career,
although
he
is
only
fifty
two
years
of
ago.
He
was
born
In
Lon
gueull
on
Sept.
16,
1850.
At
the
age
of
twenty-three
lie
cjnteisttd
Cham
bly
for
the
legislature
as
a
Liberal,
and
was
elected,
serving
one
term.
In
1886
he
entered
the
Dominion
Par
liament,
winning
Chanibly
for
the
Liberals
in
a
bye-election.
He
was
re-elected
for
Chambly
in
1887
and
1891.
In
1890
he
was
elected
for
Mai
sonneuve,
>
rie
of
the
Montreal
seats.
In
1900
lit;
contested
both
Maison
neuve
and
Terrebone,
and
was
elect
ed
in
both
c
nstituencies.
He
was
the
first
Liberal
ever
elected
for
this
con
stituency,
which
was
formerly
Chap
leau's
stronghold.
