Nor'Wester (1859) The Nor'Wester, Manitoba’s first newspaper, was published from December 28, 1859 until September 28, 1869. The prospectus, published August 22, 1859, promised the newspaper would promote local interests and report all events impartially. Its publication frequency varied; it was published weekly or biweekly. It was suppressed by Louis Riel’s supporters and was merged with the Red River Pioneer to become The New Nation.
